Emergency dental care treats serious dental concerns that must be addressed within the day or within a few hours. Heart City Health’s dental office accepts same-day emergency dental care to treat serious dental issues quickly.

Signs of a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies happen in a number of ways and are expressed with a variety of symptoms. If you have any signs of a dental emergency, it’s important to visit your dentist to treat the issue or call the dental office to ask questions about your concerns. These are some of the major signs of a dental emergency.

Bleeding That Won’t Stop

Some bleeding after a tooth extraction or brushing and flossing is expected. However, if your gums bleed or swell every time you brush your teeth, or if the socket of your tooth extraction doesn’t stop bleeding, see your dentist right away.

Bleeding gums can be a serious sign of gum disease or infection. Early treatment is vital for preserving your teeth and your overall health.

Persistent or Severe Dental Pain

Severe dental pain is a major sign of tooth damage or decay. Infection is another common cause of toothaches.

Symptoms of Toothaches Include

  • Painful or swollen jaw
  • Throbbing tooth
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Tooth sensitivity to pressure
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Pain while chewing

Most toothaches won’t go away over time, and putting off the issue can worsen the underlying condition or cause the pain, infection, or decay to spread to other teeth. If you have a toothache, something is wrong – even if your tooth looks normal.

Don’t wait to see your dentist. Every day you delay increases your risk of losing your tooth or making the dental issue worse.

Tooth Loss or Damage

If a tooth gets knocked out, your dentist may be able to re-implant the tooth if you visit the dentist within an hour or two. Broken and lost teeth need to be treated quickly to prevent infection.

Some damaged or infected teeth need to be extracted right away. Symptoms like having loose teeth, tooth discoloration, pus in your mouth, or a metal taste in your mouth are indicators that you may need a tooth extraction.
