What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is a safe, effective, drugless option to alleviate pain coming from the spine, muscles and joints of the body. Chiropractors use a hands-on, drug-free approach in treating your activity-limiting pain. When we move better, we feel better. At Heart City, your Chiropractic appointment will include a detailed exam, establishing a diagnosis, and working toward a treatment. We will provide you with a plan to improve the way you move, and get you back to doing the things you love!
Recently, The American College of Physicians recommended Chiropractic care as the first line of defense against back pain. Rest assured, the Chiropractic care you receive at Heart City is backed by science and endorsed by your medical doctors. Our approach uses evidence-based treatments to decrease pain and help your movement; while respecting the body’s natural ability to heal. Research shows Chiropractic care and medical care combined can provide greater pain relief.
Is Seeing a Chiropractor Safe?
Yes, seeing a chiropractor is safe. More than 35 million Americans each year receive chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic is one of the safest non-drug, non-invasive forms of health care available for the treatment of muscle and spinal pain. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small.
The American Chiropractic Association describes that many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours. Chiropractic malpractice premiums are the lowest of all medical professionals, a testament to the safety of chiropractic care.
What Conditions do Chiropractors Treat?
Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients with a variety of health conditions. They are well known for caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches using their chiropractic adjustments. Other conditions commonly treated by chiropractors include…
-
- Sprains / Strains
- Sciatica
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Migraines and Headaches
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Temporomandibular joint pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Pain during exercise or training
Do I Need a Referral From My MD?
Chiropractors are portal-of-entry providers and therefore do not require a referral, although this may vary depending on your insurance plan. Your pcp may initiate the referral for you or you may call and set up your own appointment with our chiropractor at (574) 293-0052.
Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, Medicare, Indiana Medicaid, and workers’ compensation plans. Our chiropractor is in network with Medicare, Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans.
Can my Chiropractor give me a prescription?
A chiropractor’s main focus is treating your musculoskeletal system. They are not permitted to prescribe medication or perform any type of surgery. However, in comparison with other methods of pain relief–such as over-the-counter prescriptions–adjustments are a safe and effective way to treat your pain and discomfort.
What to Expect After the Appointment
If you’re new to chiropractic care, there are a few things you should expect after your appointments.
Soreness
Repetitive ice and heat after an adjustment can help alleviate soreness, as well as moving regularly and taking time to exercise.
Care
Staying hydrated is an important part of after-adjustment care. In addition to drinking plenty of liquids, exercise is another way to ensure your adjustment is as effective as possible.
Timeline for Future Appointments to Address the Issue
Future appointment schedules depend on different patient needs. Whether you come to help an injury, alleviate pain, or simply get adjusted, each person will have a varied timeline for their next visit. Your doctor will be able to discuss the next visit and when they think you should return to best help your conditions.
